Institute of Neurosciences (INK), Kolkata, India

The Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata (INK) is a major specialist clinical neuroscience centre in Eastern India, established by the vision of Newcastle ‘Neurosurgeon of the Millenium’ Dr RP Sengupta. INK has 150 in-patient beds plus a busy out-patient clinic, and serves a catchment area of 500 million people. Treatment facilities are state-of-the-art, including all modern diagnostic imaging modalities, coupled with an outstanding team of doctors and support staff. This provides unrivalled access to large groups of patients with defined neurological disease, which would not be possible in any single UK centre.

Members of the Movement Lab are collaborating with INK to carry out studies with stroke patients. Initially, these aim to understand the process of recovery, and link directly to our work on reticular formation and bimanual co-ordination. Ultimately, as we understand these processes better, we hope to test novel therapies to improve recovery in patient populations at INK – an example would be our wearable device. All our studies in Kolkata are passed by the INK’s Institutional Ethical Review Committee, and include clinical collaborators at INK.
